The Treme (6th Ward) is an area of New Orleans, Louisiana, which claims to be the oldest black community in the U.S. Its relationship to Congo Square and Storyville are well documented. This historic area, so close to the French Quarter, is considered by many to be ‘ground zero for the the story of jazz’.

The Treme has a rich tradition in music which has played its part in uniting the black urban community, and which has produced countless musicians over the years, many of international repute.

Today the music of churches, bar rooms and street parades (second lines) is no less dynamic, and visitors from around the world recognise the importance and significance of the music in global terms.

‘The Treme is to Jazz what Bethlehem is to Christianity and much much more!’

Mick Jagger
